Agave Nectar is a delicious vegan alternative to other sweeteners, like honey. It has a low glycemic index, meaning that it won't spike your blood sugar like refined sugar does. It has a nice sweet flavor without any weird aftertaste. I like to use it with some almond butter on one of my sprouted grain english muffins, a delish portable breakfast that lets me hit the road fast and sticks with me all morning. However as with many other things that are good for you, manufacturers get a hold of it and twist it into something that ends up not being good for you, as in the case of corn syrup. Corn syrup in its natural state is not bad for you, but once they turn it into high fructose corn syrup, it turns into an addictive substance that spikes your blood sugar through the roof. This article from Global Healing center discusses the good and bad side of agave nectar. I am glad that the bottom line is that the brand I use, Madhava, (I use the raw version) is one of the good quality, healthy for you, versions. http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/is-agave-nectar-safe/ |
